Sullivan
Baluster

An element from the iconic Carson Pirie Scott building built in 1896, this section of the cast iron baluster is a significant representation of a unique style of architecture. As a piece from the structure designed by famous architect Louis Sullivan, it’s design follows the art nouveau style that is seen through the building.

The 122 year old ornate object is created in cast iron that was then coated in copper, giving it its metallic reddish brown hue. Found stuck in tar and plaster, the restoration required removal of debris, mineral cleaning and stabilization of the copper coated cast iron piece.
